If you’re considering family portraits, wedding photography, or a personal branding photoshoot, you might feel overwhelmed by all the terms photographers use. Navigating this vocabulary can complicate the booking process, but understanding these terms will enhance your experience and communication with your photographer. Here’s a breakdown of essential photography terms every client should know, along with their meanings and how they impact your session.
Holiday minis anyone?
Definition: You may have seen your photographer advertise mini sessions! These brief photography sessions last 15 to 20 minutes and often come with a theme. They’re scheduled back-to-back on specific dates and locations for efficiency.
Importance: Mini sessions let you capture special moments without the commitment of a full session. They’re perfect for those who prefer not to spend too long in front of the camera, especially during holidays or spring blooms. Keep an eye out for mini session openings!
Buzz word alert!
Definition: “Authentic” is so commonly used on photographers website, including my own. It has become sort of a buzz word but, we want you to know that authentic images means photos of your partner’s sweet smile, those belly laughs from your little ones, and genuine emotions – no stiff poses here.
Importance: Many photographers try to create a real experience that encourages clients to be themselves, resulting in more meaningful photographs. This may mean doing an activity you normally do and just photographing it! If this resonates with you, be sure to send me an inquiry 😉 .
Ditch the corporate headshots!!
Definition: This style focuses on candid moments in everyday life instead of posed portraits, telling a story about your experiences.
Importance: If you prefer a natural and less formal approach, lifestyle photography is perfect for you. It captures genuine interactions and emotions, showcasing your personality and relationships, whether in business or family sessions.
Let’s shoot at golden hour!
Definition: Backlighting occurs when the light source, like the sun, is behind the subject, creating a glowing effect.
Importance: This technique adds a magical quality to your photos, especially during golden hour, just before sunset. It creates beautiful highlights around subjects, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
Another buzz word – eye roll!
Definition: Candid shots are spontaneous photos taken without posed direction, capturing AUTHENTIC moments as they unfold….lol. Seriously, we’re here to tell your story through photos you’ll cherish.
Importance: If you prefer a relaxed approach, let your photographer know you’re interested in more candid shots. These images often showcase true emotions and interactions.
The editing que is lengthy!! (aka we have a lot of photos to edit and deliver)
Definition: This is where we add our unique touch, including adjustments to lighting, color, and retouching.
Importance: Photographers have different editing styles—some prefer a natural look, while others may lean toward a a more contrasted look. Check out photographers portfolios to be sure you like their style.
Please don’t ask for them
Definition: RAW files are uncompressed image files that contain all the data captured by the camera’s sensor, offering more flexibility in post-processing to then add that flavor of ours.
Importance: If you’re interested in receiving RAW files, clarify this with your photographer, as many deliver only edited images. It’s like the sketch before the final painting!
Definition: The session fee covers the photographer’s time and expertise for the shoot, while a package often includes additional services like prints or digital images.
Importance: Understanding these terms helps you evaluate different pricing structures. Always ask what’s included in the session fee versus a package to ensure you’re getting the services you want.
Definition: A styled shoot is a meticulously planned session that includes specific themes, props, and wardrobe choices.
Importance: If you want your session to convey a particular look or feel, suggesting a styled shoot can help you achieve your vision through a collaborative process.
Now you know the lingo! You can significantly enhance your communication with your photographer. Whether you’re planning a mini session or seeking authentic lifestyle shots, understanding the terminology will help you express your preferences and expectations. Most importantly, relax and enjoy the process—after all, you’re capturing memories that will last a lifetime!
